Autumn at Yummzy: Evenings Out, New Bakes and Halloween in Canary Wharf

October is a lovely month at Yummzy. The evenings are drawing in, the coffee orders are getting warmer and more of you are asking us what is on after work. So here is a round-up of what we have been up to in Cabot Square this autumn, what is new on the counter and what is coming up before Halloween.

If you are new here, we are a 100% gluten-free cafe and bakery in Canary Wharf. Everything we make is plant-based, low carb, free from eggs and dairy and made with no added sugar. That means you can choose anything on the counter without reading the small print first.

A comedy night to start the season

On Thursday 1 October we handed the cafe over to AdLibretto for an evening of completely improvised comedy. Three guest groups went first. Repeat Themselves took two films suggested by the audience and blended them into something new, In Stitches played fast short-form improv games and Big Questions tackled one of life's big questions with no script at all. Then AdLibretto closed the night with a one-off original musical, made up on the spot, so nobody will ever see it again. It set the tone nicely for the rest of the season.

New on the counter: Earl Grey Loaf and Mayan Hot Chocolate

Our newest bake is the Earl Grey Loaf. It is infused with Earl Grey tea for gentle notes of bergamot, has a soft, tender crumb and is finished with a bright lemon glaze. Like the rest of our range, it is baked with almond flour and sweetened with erythritol and stevia. It contains almonds, and we handle other nuts in our kitchen.

For something warm, the Mayan Hot Chocolate has become one of the drinks of the season. Both have been selling fast this autumn, so if you spot them, do not hesitate.

The old favourites have not gone anywhere. Carrotzy Walnutty is still our best-selling slice, with Cappuccino Cake and Triple Choco Heart close behind.

Things to do in Canary Wharf this October

Looking for something to do in Canary Wharf that is not another drink in the same bar? Here is what is coming up at Yummzy. Every event is ticketed, and you will find them all on our Events page.

  • Chess Coffee Morning, Sunday 11 October, 10:30am until after midday. Bring a friend or come on your own and meet other players. £9, including a Sentia cocktail or another drink of your choice.
  • Board Games Night, Wednesday 21 October. Easy, social games, warm drinks and a table of people who were strangers when they sat down. £9, with a drink included.
  • Latte Art Workshop for beginners, Saturday 24 October, 9:30am. Our baristas will teach you how to steam milk, how to pour and how to make your first shapes, with plenty of practice time. £32, which includes the coffees you make and 10% off everything on the day.
  • Halloween Trick or Treats Party, Thursday 29 October, 6:30pm. More on that below.

Salsa, every week

Salsa runs at Yummzy every Thursday and Saturday, except in August, over Christmas and in the first week of the New Year. The Thursday session starts at 6:30pm and has two classes. You do not need a partner or any experience, and plenty of people come on their own. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes you can move in. The classes are run by an independent teacher, and the booking details are on our Events page.

Our Halloween Trick or Treats Party

Our Halloween party is on Thursday 29 October from 6:30pm, and costumes are a must. Your £22 ticket includes:

  • a welcome drink, either one of our signature lattes or a mocktail
  • a trick or treat game, where you might win a Yummzy treat or get a cheeky trick
  • a costume contest, so dress to scare or to sparkle

Spaces are limited and entry is by ticket only, so book ahead. And arrive in good time, because the tricks start promptly.

Hosting your own Halloween party?

If you are planning a party at home or in the office, our darkest cakes suit the season. The Triple Choco Cake is made with single estate cacao, covered in chocolate frosting and hides a heart of chocolate frosting in the middle. The Exotic Black Forest Cake sandwiches chocolate sponge with a deep kirsch frosting under a chocolate glaze. Both are 9 inch and cut into 16 slices, so there is enough for a crowd.

You will find these and the rest of our whole cakes online. Please give us at least 3 days' notice. We hand deliver within the M25 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Sending a treat to someone outside London? Yummtella, our spoon-worthy spread, is the one product we deliver nationwide.
